Telefonica bids 18bn for O2

Mobile phone group O2 has agreed a £17.7bn takeover offer from the Spanish telecom company Telefonica.
It will allow Telefonica to get a foothold in the UK and Germany, two of Europe's largest mobile phone markets.

FTSE 100 ends Wednesday up

The FTSE 100 ended the day up 45.70 at 5227.80
Anglo Americam lead the gainers, up 95p at 1658p while Prudential was down 9.5p at 476.
Prudential announced that it will keep its 79% stake in Internet bank Egg as profits at Egg rose to £17.9m in the 3 months to 30th September, up from £13.9m for the same period last year

High street bank to close Indian call centres

Abbey, the high street bank formerly known as Abbey National, is to shut down its call centres in India, bringing 1000 jobs back to Britain according to press reports today.
The report says that the decision was prompted by complaints from customers.
The jobs were transferred to India in 2003 before Abbey National was bought by a Spanish company and renamed Abbey.
The Mail says that the bank is expected to issue a formal statement on its retreat later this year

FTSE ends downward run

The FTSE ended Monday up 65.50 to finish at 5207.6
Anglo American (up 70p), Xstrata (up 50p) and Capita Group (up 13.5p) headed the FTSE 100 risers

BSkyB buys broadnand provider Easynet

Satellite TV giant BSkyB has purchased broadband internet provider Easynet for £211m. As News365.co.uk reported on 17th October Easynet had confirmed that they had received an approach, but despite refusing to say who this approach was from, the rumours were flying that it was BSkyB.
BSkyB will now be able to offer customers broadband, telephony and television services.
UK broadband connections nearly doubled to 8.1m in the year to 30th June 2005

FTSE 100 down

The FTSE 100 was down 22 today to finish the week at 5142.1
PartyGaming lead the rising shares, up 8p at 86p, while Compass Group were the biggest loser down 10.75p at 175p

£1.2bn dividend for Philip Green

Arcadia has paid a £1.3bn dividend payment to shareholders.
Philip Green owns 92% of the group and will receive a £1.2bn dividend payment. The remaining 8% is owned by HBOS

The FTSE 100 closed down 96.1 at 5167.80 today with Cairn Energy topping the losers down 96p or 5.69%.
Enterprise Inns (up 5.5p) and AstraZeneca (up 18p) headed the shares on the up

1,100 jobs saved at UK insurance company

950 staff of Pearl in Peterborough will be employed by Indian software firm Tata as plans to outsource the Pearl administration are finalised. 150 staff will remain employed by Pearl.
Tata will take over most of the administrative work for the 4m Pearl life insurance and pension policies.
Tata Consulting Services is currently the largest software services company in India

UK inflation pushed higher

UK inflation rose at a lower than expected rate in September. There were fears that rising petrol prices would cause inflation to rise more than it did.
UK consumer price inflation increased from 2.4% in August to 2.5%4% in September, say the Office for National Statistics.
The underlying rate of retail price inflation (RPI) rose from 2.3% in August to 2.5% in September.
The headline rate (which includes mortgage payments) fell to 2.7% from 2.8% in August.

Is BSkyB to enter broadband market

The announcement on Friday that BSkyB aims to go on an acquisition spree has lead to rumours that it wants to get into the broadband internet market.
And shares in broadband internet provider Easynet have risen on hopes that BSkyB will bid for the company.
Easynet has confirmed that it had received a bid but refused to name the source

Somerfield backs £1.1bn takeover bid

The board of the 5th largest supermarket in the UK, Somerfield, have accepted a £1.1bn takeover offer. The offer was put forward by a group made up of Robert Tchenguiz a property tycoon, Apax Partners a private equity group and investment bank Barclays Capital.
The offer will now be put to shareholders

Bank to trial new security system

Lloyds TSB have announced that they are to trial a new security system for their online banking customers.
Customers will receive a small keyring-sized device that displays a six-digit security code that changes every 30 seconds. When accessing online banking services customers will need to enter the security code.
The idea is that even if fraudsters obtain the login and password belonging to a customer, these details will be useless without the randomly generated six-digit code
